PGI Siatista (ΠΓΕ Σιάτιστα)

In the district of Kozani, in western Macedonia’s southeastern part, the PGI Siatista (ΠΓΕ Σιάτιστα) zone (est.1993) is identified with the area of the municipality of the same name. Zone vineyards must be planted at an altitude exceeding 600m.

Siatista is situated in the south central part of the district of Kozani, in a mountainous area with a long winegrowing and winemaking tradition. In the picturesque town visitors today may come upon at least seven gorgeous, traditional wine cellars. Siatista’s renowned wine is the sweet “Vin Liastos,” or straw wine, whose production is fashioned after the northwestern Italian model: In essence, the grapes are air-dried in the shade for a prolonged period of time and in specially designed areas. In the 2008 revision, the PGI Siatista zone was granted the right to produce, without fortifying them, such wines.
