PGI Kos (ΠΓΕ Κώς)

The Dodecanese island and district of Kos, in the eastern segment of the southern Aegean region, forms the PGI Kos (ΠΓΕ Κως) zone, established in 2008. Zone vineyards must be planted at altitudes exceeding 20m.

Most vineyards are planted on the northern slopes of MountDikeo, which rises in the center of the island. The age-old tradition of winegrowing on Kos was almost abruptly interrupted in the 1970’s when the island’s inhabitants turned en masse to tourism-related occupations. Nevertheless, in the 1990’s organized winegrowing and winemaking resumed.
