PGI Ismaros (ΠΓΕ Ίσμαρος)

In the district of Rodopi, in the northeastern region of Thrace, the PGI Ismaros (ΠΓΕ Ίσμαρος) zone, established in 1997, comprises the areas of Maronia, Xylagani and Proskynites of the Maronia municipality and the areas of Kromvyli, Sappes and Strymi in the municipality of Sappes.

The area of Maronia, with a long history in winegrowing and winemaking, is located in the southeastern part of the district of Rodopi. Archaeological excavations have brought to light numerous ancient wine presses where the famous Maroneios or Maronitis oenos was once produced and which is closely associated with Polyphemus the Cyclops in Homer’s The Odyssey. Today, winegrowing in the area is flourishing again.
