PGΙ Karditsa (ΠΓΕ Καρδίτσα)

The demarcated area for the production of PGΙ Karditsa (ΠΓΕ Καρδίτσα) covers the exact geographic area of Karditsa prefecture. Karditsa is located in the western part of Thessaly (Thessalia) region and the vineyards must be planted at an altitude of more than 100m above sea level. This restriction excludes parts of the Thessalian plain, which are not suitable for viticulture.

The characteristics
Karditsa can be divided topographically into two diagonial bands: the mountainous part of Southern Pindos and Agrafa mountains occupy the southwestern part of the region, while part of the Trikala plain occupies the northeastern part of the prefecture. The climate is strongly affected by the region’s inland position, exactly in the “heart” of mainland Greece. The higher elevation of the interior parts of the prefecture result in a continental climate with greater seasonal and diurnal temperature variations.

Types of wines:

• White dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet
• Rosé dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet
• Red dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet

The grape varieties

Native and international grapes account for PGI Karditsa’s plantings. Limniona and Moschato Mavro (a member of the Muscat family) have an important presence in the vineyards and this also holds true for the white Malagousia grape. Although international grapes play a minor role, grapes such as Chardonnay or Syrah represent some excellent PGI wines made in the region.
