PGI Slopes of Paiko (ΠΓΕ Πλαγιές Πάικου)

In the district of Kilkis, in the northern part of central Macedonia, the PGI Slopes of Paiko (ΠΓΕ Πλαγιές Πάικου) zone (est.2009) comprises the areas of Gerakona, Goumenissa, Grivas and Filyria in the Goumenissa municipality and of Evropos, Polypetro and Toumba in the Evropos municipality.

Mount Paiko rises on the northern parts of the neighboring districts of Kilkis and Pella. The PGI Slopes of Paiko zone is situated on the eastern slopes of the mountain, overlooking Kilkis, and largely overlaps with the zone of the PDO Goumenissa red wine which is obtained from the Xinomavro and Negoska varieties. The establishment of the zone as a separate entity was necessitated by the presence of other successful cultivars in the area.
