PGI Phthiotis (ΠΓΕ Φθιώτιδα)

The demarcated area for the production of PGI Fthiotis (ΠΓΕ Φθιώτιδα) wines comprises all the areas of the prefecture of Fthiotida in Sterea Ellada, at an altitude higher than 20 meters.

The characteristics

Fthiotida is the northernmost prefecture of Sterea Ellada. Most of the vineyards extend in the area of Atalanti, Martino, Malesina, Domokos and the wider area of Stylida. The climate is warm Mediterranean. Sea-breezes blowing from the Euboean Gulf as well as the cool currents coming from Mount Parnassos moderate the hot summer conditions.

• White dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet
• Rosé dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet
• Red dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet

The grape varieties
An impressive number of both native and international grape varieties, such as Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Sauvignon Blanc, Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, are successfully cultivated for the production of wines under the PGI Fthiotis designation.

Permitted grape varieties:

White Wines
Indigenous: Aidani white, Athiri, Assyrtiko, Kontokladi, Malagousia, Roditis, Robola, Savatiano
International: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc (max 20%), Verdicchio Bianco, Semillon.

Red Wines
Indigenous: Vradiano, Limnio, Mavroudia, Aglianico
International: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Rouge, Merlot, Syrah, Schioppettino.

Rosé wines
All grape varieties permitted in white and red wine production, are allowed.
