PGI Magnisia (ΠΓΕ Μαγνησία)
The PGI Magnisia (ΠΓΕ Μαγνησία) covers the entire territory of the prefecture of Magnisia (Magnesia) in the south-eastern part of Thessalia (Thessaly). However, according to the technical file of PGI Magnisia the altitude of the vineyards should exceed the limit of 20m. above sea level.
The characteristics
Although there are some vineyards climbing up to 250m altitude, the majority of plantings are grown on fertile plains and low hills. The region has a typical Mediterranean climate for the most part. The climate is influenced by both the Pagasetic Gulf and the mountain range of Pelion.
Wine types:
• White dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet
• Rosé dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet
• Red dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet
The grape varieties
The largest part of the vineyard is devoted to Roditis and Savatiano. The rest of the grapes grown play a minor role, however Assyrtiko, Limnio and Cabernet Sauvignon are worth mentioning.
