PGI Meteora (ΠΓΕ Μετέωρα)

In the district of Trikala, in the northwestern part of the region of Thessalia (Thessaly), in the center of the country, the PGI Meteora (ΠΓΕ Μετέωρα) zone, established in 2006, comprises the municipal areas of Vasiliki, Kalambaka, Parallithea, Tymphea and Hasia. Zone vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 150 to 800 meters.

The area of Kalambaka, in the northwestern part of the district of Trikala, has a long tradition in winegrowing. Its hub is the village of Kastraki which is renowned for its red wines and lies south of the towering rocks of Meteora. After a slump in winegrowing activities, viniculture returned to the greater area, with the PGI Meteora zone’s wines.

• White dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet
• Rosé dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, sweet
• Red dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet
• White sparkling dry, semi-dry
• Rosé sparkling dry, semi-dry

 

Varieties:

White Wines: Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Batiki, Debina, Roditis, Chardonnay.

Red Wines: Zalovitiko, Xinomavro, Limniona, Vlachiko, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Merlot, Syrah.

Rosé wines: Vlachiko, Zalovitiko, Limniona, Roditis, Xinomavro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Merlot, Syrah and additionally Debina, Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Batiki, Chardonnay for the sparkling wines.
