PGI Karystos (ΠΓΕ Κάρυστος)

In the island district of Evia, in Central Greece’s eastern part, the PGI Karystos (ΠΓΕ Κάρυστος) zone (est.1995) comprises the areas of Karystos, Aetos, Grambia, Kalyvia and Platanistos in the municipality of Karystos. It also comprises the entire Marmari municipal area and the communities of Amygdalia, Kafireas and Komito.

The vineyards yielding the PGI Karystos wines lie in the windswept southern part of Evia. This, too, is an area with a long tradition in the cultivation of vineyards which has shown an impressive pace of growth in recent years, reflected in the revision of 2009 which broadened not only the zone’s vine selection but also the range of wine types the zone is allowed to produce. A glance at the varieties included reveals the strong presence of the Aegan Sea region in the area’s trend towards the production of sweet wines.
