The effort to protect and safeguard the Protected Designation of Origin of Greek wines by legislation began in 1971. It was then that the first, modern Protected Designations of Origin of Greek wineswere established. A few years later more wines followed, together with the recognition of Local Wines. As of the end of the 21st century’s first decade, Greece converged with the new European Union legislation governing wine categories, a convergence which is now gradually being adopted by the Greek winegrowing sector (PDO wines and PGI wines).
