During Venetian rule in the Aegean, Santorini was counted as one of the producers of great wines and especially of Vinsanto. That is also the time when the long tradition of making barrels for storage of wine began on the island. Many foreign travelers who discovered the vineyard of Santorini and its wines faithfully transferred their experiences to their journals. As early as 1657, several of those travel journals started seeing the light of publicity in the capital of France and the fame of Santorini wines in Paris took off.
